Choosing an AI chatbot can feel like choosing a phone plan. Every option claims to be the smartest, the fastest or the most useful, and comparisons go out of date within weeks. It is no surprise that many people simply use whichever tool they tried first.
In reality, the leading chatbots are now broadly capable, and the differences that matter are usually practical. Which accounts and apps does it connect to? How does it handle your data? Does it suit the kind of work you do? Those questions tend to last longer than any benchmark.
This guide compares the main AI chatbots available in Australia, explains free and paid options, covers privacy and security considerations and suggests how to choose for personal use, marketing and business. For the bigger picture, see our guide to artificial intelligence.
The main AI chatbots
ChatGPT, made by OpenAI, is the best-known AI chatbot and offers a broad set of features, including writing, analysis, image generation and web search. Gemini is Google’s assistant, closely connected to Google services such as Search, Gmail and Docs. Claude, from Anthropic, is widely used for writing, analysis and coding. Microsoft Copilot is built into Windows and Microsoft 365, which makes it a natural option for organisations that already use those tools.
DeepSeek, a Chinese AI company, drew global attention in early 2025. In February 2025 the Australian Government directed government entities to remove DeepSeek products from government systems and devices on security grounds. That direction applies to government, but it is a useful reminder for any organisation to check where data goes. Google AI Studio is different again, a developer tool for testing Google’s Gemini models rather than an everyday chatbot.
How they differ in practice
The most useful differences are about fit rather than intelligence. A chatbot that connects to your email, calendar and documents can save time because you do not need to copy information across. That makes Gemini attractive for Google Workspace users and Copilot attractive for Microsoft 365 users, while ChatGPT and Claude offer their own connections and integrations.
Style and strengths also vary. Some tools produce more concise answers, some handle long documents better and some are stronger at particular tasks such as coding or image creation. Because models are updated frequently, the best test is to run the same real tasks through two or three tools and compare the results yourself.
| Chatbot | Made by | Natural fit |
|—|—|—|
| ChatGPT | OpenAI | General use, broad features |
| Gemini | Google | Google Search and Workspace users |
| Claude | Anthropic | Writing, analysis and coding |
| Copilot | Microsoft | Windows and Microsoft 365 users |
| DeepSeek | DeepSeek | Check data and security policies first |
Free versus paid plans
Most chatbots offer a free tier with limits on usage, features or model access. Free plans are enough for many personal tasks and for trying a tool before committing. Paid plans usually add higher limits, newer models, more features and, for business plans, administrative and data controls.
Free tiers may also differ in other ways. OpenAI, for example, began testing ads in ChatGPT’s Free and Go tiers in 2026, while stating that ads do not influence answers and that higher paid plans do not show ads. Plan details change often, so check each provider’s current pricing and terms.
> Key quote: the best chatbot is usually the one that fits the tools you already use and handles your data the way you need.
Privacy and security
Privacy settings matter more than most comparisons admit. Consumer plans may use conversations to improve models unless you change a setting, while business plans commonly offer stronger controls. Before entering client information, contracts or personal details, check the provider’s data use settings and terms.
Organisations covered by the Privacy Act must also handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles, whichever tool they use. A short internal policy listing approved tools and what must never be entered is a sensible step, as explained in AI for business and our guide to the Privacy Act and AI decisions.
Choosing for marketing and business
For marketing, the best AI tools are those that help with research, drafting, analysis and creative variations while fitting into your workflow. A chatbot for writing and thinking, a design tool with AI features and the AI built into your ad platforms often cover most needs without paying for many separate products.
Search behaviour is another reason to understand these tools. Customers increasingly ask chatbots for recommendations, which affects how businesses are found. Our existing guide to ChatGPT vs Google for business explores how people use each, and the AI SEO guide explains how visibility in AI answers works.
A simple way to test chatbots yourself
The most reliable comparison is your own. Choose five tasks you do regularly, such as summarising a long email thread, drafting a client update, analysing a small spreadsheet, brainstorming campaign ideas and answering a question about a recent event. Run each task through two or three chatbots with the same prompt.
Score the results on accuracy, usefulness, tone and how much editing they need. Note whether the tool cited sources, admitted uncertainty or made things up. Check how easily it fits your workflow, for example whether it can read files from your drive or connect to your email.
Repeat the test every few months, because models and features change quickly. A tool that was weaker last year may now be the best fit, and plan limits or prices may have shifted.
Common mistakes
A common mistake is choosing a tool from a headline benchmark rather than from real tasks. Another is paying for several overlapping subscriptions when one or two would do. Many people also ignore privacy settings and enter sensitive information into consumer accounts.
Finally, some teams let everyone choose their own tools, which makes data handling and quality hard to manage. Agreeing on approved tools keeps things consistent.
Where to start
All of the leading AI chatbots are capable, and the right choice depends on the tools you already use, the tasks you need help with and how your data is handled. Test two or three options on real work, check privacy settings and settle on an approved set.
