Creative is often the biggest driver of advertising performance, and producing enough of it has always been a challenge. AI promises a solution, with tools that generate images, headlines, video and variations in seconds. Ad platforms now build these features in directly.

The opportunity is real. More variations mean more learning about what resonates. But AI creative can also produce generic, off-brand or misleading ads, and fake testimonials made with AI create serious legal and trust risks.

This guide explains how AI is used for ad creative on Meta, Google and other platforms, where AI user-generated-style ads fit, how to keep creative honest and how to test it well. For the wider picture, see our guide to artificial intelligence.

How AI creative tools work

AI creative tools fall into two groups. Standalone tools generate images, video or copy that you then upload as ads, as covered in our guides to AI image generators and AI video generators. Built-in platform tools adapt or generate creative inside the ad platform, often automatically.

Built-in tools can crop images for different placements, adjust brightness, add backgrounds, suggest text variations and combine assets in new ways. Some features are switched on by default, so it is worth checking campaign settings to know what the platform will change.

AI creative on Meta

Meta’s Advantage+ features include creative options that can adjust and enhance ads automatically, such as varying text, adjusting images and generating backgrounds. Meta also offers generative AI tools for advertisers within its ad products. Availability varies by market and changes frequently.

These features can increase the number of variations and adapt creative to different placements. The trade-off is control over exactly what people see. Review previews, switch off enhancements that do not suit the brand and monitor results. Our Meta ads complete guide covers campaign setup more broadly.

AI creative on Google

Google Ads also uses AI to generate and adapt creative. Performance Max campaigns can combine text, images and video into ads across Google’s channels, and offer tools to generate assets. In Search, text customisation within AI Max can create ad text based on your landing pages and existing ads.

As with Meta, review generated assets before and after they run, remove anything inaccurate and give the system strong source material. Our guide to AI Max for Search explains the Search features in detail.

AI UGC-style ads

User-generated-content ads look like real customers talking about a product, often filmed on a phone. AI tools can now produce similar videos with synthetic presenters. They are cheaper and faster than working with creators, which makes them tempting.

The risk is presenting synthetic people as genuine customers. A testimonial or review that did not come from a real customer can mislead consumers. Using AI presenters to explain a product is different from implying they are real users who have bought it. Clear framing matters.

Honesty and compliance

Australian Consumer Law applies to advertising however it is produced. The ACCC warns that businesses must not make false or misleading claims, which includes fake testimonials and endorsements. AI-generated images that exaggerate what a product does or looks like can also mislead.

Platforms have their own policies, including disclosure rules for certain ad types such as political or social issue ads. Check current policies for each platform, keep records of how creative was produced and get advice for regulated categories such as health and finance.

Testing AI creative

AI makes it easy to create many variations, but more is not always better. Test meaningful differences, such as the core message, hook or format, rather than tiny changes. Our guide to creative testing strategy explains a structured approach.

Measure results on outcomes that matter, such as leads or sales, rather than clicks alone. Accurate tracking is essential, as explained in our guide to conversion tracking setup.

Building a source library for AI creative

AI creative tools work best when they have strong material to work from. Build a library of genuine product photos, team and location images, approved logos, brand colours and fonts, and proven headlines and offers. Upload these as assets so platform tools have accurate inputs.

Real customer content is especially valuable. With permission, genuine reviews, photos and videos from customers provide authentic proof that AI cannot replace. Keep records of permissions so you know what can be used and where.

Agree on simple rules for what AI may change. For example, it may adjust backgrounds and crops but must not alter how the product looks, add features or create people who appear to be customers. Share the rules with anyone producing ads, including agencies and freelancers, so standards stay consistent across channels.

Review the library regularly. Remove outdated offers and images, add new proof as it arrives and note which assets perform best, so future creative builds on what works.

Common mistakes

A common mistake is accepting platform enhancements without checking what they change. Another is producing AI creative that looks generic and fails to reflect the brand. Some advertisers create synthetic testimonials that present AI people as real customers, which risks breaching consumer law.

Finally, testing too many minor variations spreads budget thinly and produces unclear results.

Where to start

AI can help advertisers produce more creative, adapt it to placements and learn faster, provided it is reviewed, on brand and honest. Check platform settings, avoid synthetic testimonials and test meaningful variations against real outcomes. Frequently asked questions

Can AI make my ads?

Yes. Standalone tools can generate images, copy and video, and ad platforms such as Meta and Google include AI features that adapt or create creative. Review every asset for accuracy and brand fit before and after it runs.

What is Advantage+ creative on Meta?

Advantage+ creative is a set of Meta features that can automatically adjust and enhance ads, such as varying text, adjusting images or generating backgrounds. Availability changes over time, so check your campaign settings and switch off enhancements that do not suit your brand.

Are AI UGC ads allowed?

AI presenters can be used to explain products, but presenting synthetic people as real customers or making up testimonials can mislead consumers and breach consumer law. Platform policies also apply. Frame AI presenters honestly and never invent reviews.

Do I need to disclose AI in ads?

Platforms have their own disclosure rules, particularly for political or social issue ads, so check current policies. Under Australian Consumer Law, the key requirement is that ads must not mislead, regardless of how they were made.

Does AI creative perform better?

Not automatically. AI makes it easier to produce variations, which can speed up learning, but performance depends on the message, offer and audience. Test meaningful differences and measure leads or sales rather than clicks alone.

Next level performance starts with a clearer strategy.
