Great content will not rank if Google cannot find, crawl or understand your pages. That is what technical SEO covers. This technical SEO checklist is written for small business owners, not developers. It covers the checks that matter most, mobile SEO included, and tells you which ones to fix first. Most small sites do not need a complex audit; they need the basics done properly.
Work through the list in order. The first section stops the problems that can hide your whole site.
Why technical SEO matters for small sites
Google’s Search Essentials guide is clear that a page has to be crawlable and indexable before it can appear in results at all. For most small business websites, technical SEO is less about clever tricks and more about removing blockers. Once those are fixed, your effort is better spent on content, local signals and reviews. Our what is SEO guide explains how the pieces fit together.
What to fix first
If time is short, prioritise in this order. First, anything stopping important pages being indexed, such as noindex tags, robots.txt blocks or server errors. Second, mobile problems that make pages hard to use. Third, broken links and redirect chains on pages that bring in leads. Speed tweaks, schema and tidying thin pages come after that. Fixing a single indexing error on your main service page is usually worth more than shaving a fraction of a second off load time.
The technical SEO checklist: crawling and indexing
- Set up Google Search Console and verify your domain. It is free and shows how Google sees your site.
- Check the Page indexing report for important pages marked as not indexed, and find out why.
- Review robots.txt. Make sure it is not blocking pages you want found. Google’s robots.txt introduction explains what it can and cannot do.
- Look for stray noindex tags, a common leftover after a site launch.
- Submit an XML sitemap that lists only live, indexable pages. Google’s sitemaps overview covers the basics.
- Check canonical tags point to the version of each page you want ranked.
- Make sure only one version of the site resolves: https, with or without www, but not all four.

Mobile SEO and page speed
Google uses the mobile version of your site for indexing and ranking, as explained in its mobile first indexing documentation. For mobile SEO, check:
- The same content on mobile and desktop. Hidden or missing text on mobile can mean it is not counted.
- Readable text and tappable buttons without zooming.
- Click to call phone numbers and short forms, which also help leads.
Page speed and Core Web Vitals
Google’s Core Web Vitals page describes the metrics for loading, responsiveness and visual stability. Check them in Search Console. Common fixes are compressing images, cutting unused plugins and scripts, and using decent hosting. Speed also lifts conversion rates, which our CRO service focuses on.
Site structure, links and security
- HTTPS everywhere, with no mixed content warnings.
- A clear structure: services, locations and articles grouped logically, each important page within a few clicks of the homepage.
- Internal links from related pages, using descriptive anchor text. This also helps visitors find your services.
- Fix broken links and redirect chains. Point old URLs straight to their new home with a single 301.
- Unique titles and meta descriptions for every page.
- Basic schema markup, such as LocalBusiness details, where it fits.
- Prune or improve thin pages that add nothing for visitors.

Common mistakes
- Leaving noindex on after launch. One setting can keep a whole site out of Google.
- Chasing perfect speed scores while ignoring indexing errors that matter more.
- Bloated sitemaps full of redirected, broken or noindexed URLs.
- A different site on mobile that drops content or internal links.
- Treating technical SEO as a one off. Plugins, redesigns and new pages break things, so check Search Console monthly.
